Simple + easy nighttime skincare routine

Updated: Aug 27, 2021

I believe skincare routines should be simple and effective. I have tried countless products promising even more benefits and have ultimately decided that simple is best! I don't think you need to use lots of products to have good skin or use expensive products to get the job done. Over the years I have made it a mission of mine to simplify my nighttime skincare routine so that I am not spending hours (and lots of money) applying a 10 step regime before bed.

A quick background about my skin before we get into specific products:

- I have combination skin (oily T-Zone but dry cheeks)

- I do not suffer from acne, but do get breakouts once a month around the time of my period

- I am in my late twenties + want to be preventive when it comes to my routine + products

Check out my simple + easy skincare routine below!

First step is to cleanse the skin. I typically use the same cleanser as I did in the morning. I enjoy Youth to the People's Superfood Kale Antioxidant Cleanser. It is gentle for daily use and smells great!

I have also used Olehenrikin's Truth Juice Daily Cleanser in the past and would totally repurchase. It is also gentle for daily use, smells fresh (citrusy) and lathers well. If you wear makeup, than I would recommend double cleansing to ensure you have removed any trace of makeup before applying serums and moisturizers.

Next, pat the face dry and prepare for serum.

This next step probably isn't a surprise for many because everyone seems to be talking about it and that's hyaluronic acid. It is great for deeply moisturizing the skin (yay hydration), smoothing skin texture and help to reduce visibility of fine lines and wrinkles.

I have tried a few hyaluronic acid's but find myself always returning back to The Ordinary's Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. The price point is great, the texture of the product on my skin doesn't feel sticky and I can tell the difference it has made to my skin. My skin texture is more smooth and more hydrated.

A little tip that I learned is to keep some water on the skin before you apply your hyaluronic acid as this give it something to stick to and will help hydrating the skin.

Most nights I will go straight into a night cream, but on some nights when I feel my skin needs a little something extra I will go in with a chemical exfoliant. So far I have only tried 1 (a mild one since I was a bit nervous) and purchased The Ordinary's Lactic Acid 5% + HA.

If you are interested in trying a chemical exfoliant like The Ordinary's Lactic Acid 5% + HA, I would recommend starting out with a more gentler formula before increasing in strength. Plus, you can always dilute exfoliants with your moisturizers (which is a great and safe way to try out the product). Also, keep in mind to protect your skin the following day after you've applied a lactic acid by wearing sunscreen as these can increase skin's sensitivity to the sun.

The final step (we're only at a total of 4 ... yay) is to moisturize. I personally like a thicker night cream applied on top of hyaluronic acid as I feel it locks everything in. Typically I use Fresh's Rose & Hyaluronic Acid Deep Hydration Moisturizer since I find it is light weight but still does the job to moisturize my skin well.

Hopefully the above skincare routine inspired you to revamp your current routine or maybe introduced you to some new and clean products! Let me know your thoughts below :)
